High-speed train derails near Toledo — nine dead, dozens injured
A Madrid–Seville AVE service derailed near Toledo late Tuesday, killing nine people and injuring at least 47. Emergency teams worked through the night at the scene. Spain's Transport Minister has suspended the line pending a full investigation, and Renfe has cancelled all high-speed services on the corridor until further notice.
Four arrested in Palma over alleged hotel booking fraud targeting tourists
Spanish National Police arrested four people in Palma on Tuesday in connection with a fake hotel booking scheme that defrauded more than 300 tourists of an estimated €180,000. Victims — predominantly British and German nationals — paid for accommodation that did not exist. Investigations are ongoing and police believe further arrests are likely.
Balearic Government to apply VAT to holiday rentals from January
The Balearic Islands regional government has announced that holiday rental properties will be subject to a 10% VAT charge from 1 January 2027. The measure, aimed at levelling the playing field with hotels, is expected to affect around 80,000 registered rental properties across the islands. Owners' associations have warned of significant price increases for holidaymakers.

Rallye des Légendes returns to Mallorca this weekend with 120 classic cars
The Rallye des Légendes, one of Mallorca's most celebrated classic motorsport events, gets underway this Friday with 120 pre-1980 cars tackling mountain stages in the Tramuntana. Spectators can watch from free viewing points above Sóller and Valldemossa. The event closes on Sunday with a concours display on Palma's Passeig de Born.
EES border checks at Palma Airport — what British travellers need to know
The EU's Entry/Exit System is now fully operational at Palma Airport, requiring all non-EU nationals — including British passport holders — to have their biometric data scanned on arrival and departure. Travellers are advised to allow an extra 30–45 minutes at passport control. Frequent visitors will find subsequent entries faster once enrolled in the system.
